Wednesday 16th was spent going by taxi to Trichy (Tiruchchirapalli on the map), train to Thiruvarur (I think), and cab again to Tranquebar (Tarangambadi on the map). On the road in the plains near Kodai, Ann, Gail, and Jim stopped to visit our stove potter. We

were met at the Trichy train station by Mr. Inbaraj, trustee president for the Betsy Elizabeth Trust, the Indian organization funding the Creche Schools. Gail and Ann have just spotted him. We had booked at the

gatehouse of the Bungalow on the Beach Hotel but a coconut palm had recently fallen, damaging the gatehouse roof, so we were

upgraded to the main hotel, which had been heavily damaged during the 12-26-04 tsunami, right on the Bay of Bengal. The hotel was within the fort wall built by the Danish in the early 1700's. Even since 1968, the wall has fallen to the sea from erosion. After the tsunami, the government built the rubble sea-wall to prevent further damage. The Sri Masillamani temple to the left of the hotel fared equally poorly, having lost three of its four domes. The temple remaining is still in use, and a new temple in concrete is under construction directly inland.

We spent the evening meeting Benjamin Krause, adopted son of a former Kodai couple now in Washington state, who is on the staff of Help Kids India.
