March 27 - 31 Winding down in Kodaikanal

Sunday we celebrated the day off by walking the 5k around Kodai Lake, created sometime in the 19th Century by the building of 'The Bundt', the short, curved, high damn with a road on top at the eastern end of the lake at the heart of downtown Kodaikanal. This view is from one of my pre-trip glimpses via Google Earth. We were tired at the end, but happy not to have taken one step up or down the whole way. Once again, the yellow arrow marks Bruce Peck's studio. The plain at the top is 5,000 feet below. Monday Selvam and Jim worked on the SEW crate at Bruce and Ann's, while Gail caught up on journaling and other chores at 'home'. Tuesday we spent the whole day mailing two packages of accrued junk home. It cost almost as much to ship as to buy – if it hadn't been for the bronze sculpture, it would have been more. Not junk, really, gifts for family, all carefully chosen. We paid for Air, Insured, Signed Receipt. We had a lovely farewell tea for our new friends, Bill and Julie, from Toronto, here to visit Bill's brother George (of the bagels) and Vera. Vera's very fine paintings are made in this stone studio – about the same size as Jim's in Nashville. The building to the left is the bagelry. We walked home (down hill) through the pear orchard at sunset. I thought the spiked fence on the corner of 'Estates for the Elite' framed the sheds where most people live across the valley was a nice touch – 'The rain falls on the rich and poor alike', but the rich face the sunset. (The poor get up early, so they get the sunrise...) Wednesday Gail wrote up a second sermon from Khasi Hills, and Jim searched for a place to connect to the internet and his hat, unsuccessfully, and did his last bit of work with Selvam.
