We hopped the bus to Bolyai Street, where the father and son of that name taught high school (now named for them also), invented non-Euclidian geometry in the 1800's, giving Einstein a boost. Laszlo Nagy, minister of the Bolyai Unitarian Church, teaches catechism class after a morning meeting with Gail.
Rev. Laszlo's wife Gizella runs many functions at the church and is a moving force in an international women's conference continuing in Marosvasarhely in 2112. She was very generous with her time and knowledge. The church, built around 1900 is a blend of Art Nouveau and neo-Gothic. (Gizella seemed relieved that because the church could not afford the full blown Art Nouveau treatment,
they were denied a spot on the main square, and settled for a spot
next to the old church, now used as a hostel.) The symbol under the sounding dome above the wine glass pulpit has significance in our family. Among the many art treasures in the church (and a show of works by a current artist), were these Easter eggs in the folk idiom of the area. Those with the leaf pattern are from a long standing folk tradition Matilda had described to us – a wet leaf is wrapped around the egg and allowed to dry, then it is dyed and the leaf removed – cool!
