Our first day at Lauriston Hall, Jim walked right by a millstone without noticing it, enthralled with
the garden and its surrounds. Next day we found its mate serving as a table by the sauna hut – a proper wood-fired sauna, btw. Water power has long been used at the Hall, now with a new generation of the hydroelectric dynamo first installed in 1893.
Jim made a special trip to see it. While exploring the hill behind the hydro shed (the old mortuary), he came upon this new style stile. Rosie and Annie went for a bike ride, so Jim and Gail went for a walk on Willowbank road, just across the main highway, the A762 (two lanes!). Everywhere anything stood still in the whole area, moss grew. In this lush season
with long days, it flourished.
We saw many kinds of sheep, cows, and birds, two deer, and a sprinkle of rain, and stone walls, hedgerow and barbed wire fence. The only question going back was whether we'd out-walk the weather. Even if there had been a deluge, the sight of a whole hill covered with bluebells with water drops catching the lowering sun, would have made it worth it.
